Parent Leader, Northeast Philadelphia
Christina Tanon is a Drug and Alcohol Prevention Specialist at Congreso. Congreso’s Youth Services include in-school and out-of-school time programming for students, grade K-12, across 5 schools in the North Philadelphia (19140, 19133, 19122) region. Christina’s Youth Health Education Services include instilling life skills, healthy habits, social-emotional skills, communication skills, and strengths-based career and educational goal planning to Middle school and High School students. Christina also provides resources and workshops for parents to talk to their children about the facts of drugs and alcohol, particularly their effect on the developing adolescent brain, and seeks to equip parents with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to discuss these sensitive topics. By encouraging parents to develop an authoritative (instead of an authoritarian) parenting-style, parents collaborate with students to identify and make healthy habits a priority for the family’s overall wellbeing and success, decreasing the chances of youth engaging in risky behaviors.
